A Little Less Android: Save on 5 Editors' Choice iPhones & Windows Phones

Published

Smartphone makers have gathered in Barcelona for the Mobile World Congress this week, and we're sure to see some exciting new Android phones unveiled. Of course, Apple fans will have to wait a little longer for the iPhone 6 reveal. And the Microsoft/Nokia split may leave Windows Phone enthusiasts disappointed by the MWC, too. But never fear Apple and Microsoft lovers, we've rounded up five Editors' Choice smartphone deals just for you. Save $100 or more on an iPhone 5s, 5c, or 4s, or grab a Nokia Windows Phone for $110 or less.

  1. iPhone 5sApple iPhone 5S 16GB No-Contract Smartphone for Virgin Mobile
    Store: Virgin Mobile
Price: $439.99 in-cart with free shipping

Is It Worth It?: The Apple prognosticators have put forth June as the likely month for the official iPhone 6 announcement. In the mean time, we're seeing the price on the iPhone 5S slowly drop. If you want the current title holder of "best iPhone ever made" without a contract, then Virgin Mobile is your best bet. The carrier offers the 5S or $440 in-cart, a full $110 under what everyone else charges.

The iPhone 5s boasts an Apple A7 64-bit processor with an M7 motion coprocessor, a 4" 11136x640 Retina display, an 8-megapixel iSight camera, 1080p video capture at 30 fps, a 1.2-megapixel FaceTime HD camera, a built-in fingerprint reader, 802.11a/n wireless, Bluetooth 4.0, dual microphones, and iOS 7.

    Store: Virgin Mobile
Price: $359.99 in-cart with free shipping
    Lowest By: $189

Is It Worth It?: If the iPhone 5S above is a little too rich for your blood, you'll save $80 by opting for the 5S instead. Virgin Mobile offers this iSmartphone for just $360 in-cart, which is $189 under the 5C's going no-contract price at other carriers. Though you might be tempted to think of the iPhone 5C as a gussied-up iPhone 5, CNET reminds us that the 5C has "more widely compatible global LTE coverage, an upgraded front-facing camera, and slightly better battery life" than its predecessor.

The iPhone 5C also features an Apple A6 processor, a 4" 1136x640 Retina display, an 8-megapixel iSight camera, a 1.2-megapixel FaceTime HD camera, 1080p video capture, 802.11a/n wireless, Bluetooth 4.0, dual microphones, and iOS 7.

Not only will you get the iPhone 4S for free with the activation of a 2-year contract, but you'll also score a $100 bill credit. That's a $100 savings and one of the best deals we've seen on this smartphone. It's powered by an A5 dual-core processor and features a 3.5" 960x640 Retina display, an 8-megapixel camera, 1080p video capture, 8GB internal storage, 802.11n wireless, Bluetooth 4.0, and iOS 7.

Not interested in an iPhone? AT&T Wireless offers a selection of smartphones for free with the activation of a new 2-year contract. Plus, each includes the $100 bill credit mentioned above. Is It Worth It?: Verizon customers who prefer Windows phones but want to get in on that $100 bill credit action should check out the Nokia Lumia Icon. At $199, this bundle (which also includes a wireless charging plate) is a $101 savings. Calling the recently released Lumia Icon "the best Windows phone so far," PCWorld was impressed with the smartphone on the whole: "It's solidly built, and sits solidly atop all other available Windows Phones. And, yes, it even ships with a solid app lineup, with most of its software bearing the Nokia name."

Note that it may take up to three billing cycles for the credit to appear.

It's no wonder then that the X family of Android smartphones, which Nokia just announced, looks an awful lot like the Lumia 520. Get your hands on the unlocked version of this Windows phone and see what all the fuss is about: Qualitycellz via eBay offers it for just $110, a $40 current price low and $60 drop from our previous mention.
