With much of the country already experiencing snow in October, sunshine and warmth might be on the minds of many. Orlando not only provides these good mood–inducing elements, but it also allows for proximity to a thriving metropolis, renowned clubs and restaurants, and the Happiest Place on Earth — all without leaving the continental U.S. While there are numerous sleek hotels of note in the city itself, we'll focus on the offers that let you take advantage of the famed theme parks in the area.
First thing's first: Getting there. To find a discounted flight, try searching the most recent American Airlines sale, which offers 1-way fares for as low as $59. Select Orlando routes are included in the selection. Or, if you're lucky enough to live near Atlanta, Megabus currently offers roundtrip bus rides between Atlanta and several US cities — including Orlando — for free (via coupon code "ATL10K" with a reservation fee of 50 cents). If you don't mind a lengthy bus ride, it's one of the cheapest ways to get there (aside from maybe hitchhiking).
Once in Orlando, it's hard to ignore the most famous site the area has to offer: Walt Disney World. And don't let the high-pitched mouse fool you; Disney isn't just for kids. (Just ask the numerous couples who honeymoon there each year.) There are a wealth of discounted packages at Disney, but two notable offers include a 3-night flight and hotel package for two to Disney's All-Star Music Resort or All-Star Movie Resort (from $558, a low by at least $32). Both resorts feature themed buildings, lobbies, and pools. With either option, be prepared to take a bus in between different areas of the park, as it spans about 47 square miles.
You can also stay off the park proper without being too far from Disney's influence with the Melia Orlando Hotel (stays from $129, a low by $10). The all-suite hotel — which features a spa, golf course, and pool — is located in Celebration, FL, a community that was developed by Disney. Not surprisingly, it's reportedly a clean and polished town to visit. Note that breakfast and shuttle service are included.
The other major theme park in the area is of course Universal Studios. If the thought of visiting the new Harry Potter fantasy world appeals to you (we hear the Butter Beer alone is worth the trip), look into the 3-night stay for two at Universal Orlando Resort (from $498, a low by $100). The package comes with a 2-day park pass for each adult, which allows for early entrance to the aforementioned Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Breakfast and park transportation are also included. [Update: Unfortunately, this deal has expired.]
