Forbes reports that Labor Day travel will be more affordable this year, thanks to a late holiday. Data from Hopper, a travel-planning app, indicates that "prices for domestic airfare are down 14%, at around $310 roundtrip."
But travel expert Alexandra Talty writes that no matter how low prices get, they — and your travel experience — will be better a week before or a week after the holiday weekend: "Hopper estimates that if you travel the weekend before or after the holiday, you can save about 10% on airfare. Factor in the reduced crowds and lower hotel rates, and a mid-September vacation is a pretty sweet deal."
Interestingly, we've found in past years that late August (just before Labor Day) is the best time to score a (relatively) cheaper Disney World vacation, possibly because many families have plans for the following holiday weekend. This recent data reinforces the benefits of heading to the Happiest Place on Earth late in summer.
But despite Talty's recommendations, we've found that Labor Day is still a great time to score deals that just might make the crowds worth it. Last year, we saw sites like Hotels.com and Orbitz roll out their Labor Day sales all the way in early August, slashing sometimes more than 50% off hotel stays through the holiday weekend.
