Cruisers are great for flat terrain. If you live anywhere with any road inclinations, multi speed bikes are much better. The mountain bikes are great, but on tarmac, they are not so good with stock tires. I would highly recommend searching for hybrid tires or road tires to swap out. On most bikes it's a 20 minute job per wheel. Get a second set of rims, and it becomes a 10 minute job per end. Well worth it.
