VIDEO: Why 'Cute' Things Can Trick Us Into Spending More Money

A recent study shows that consumers are willing to pay a premium for whimsical products — and we're likely to use those items more than their boring counterparts, too.

Did you know that cute items trick you into spending more money? A new study from The Journal of Consumer Research concluded that people are not only willing to pay more for items that look "whimsical," "cute," or "playful," but interact with them more as well. For example, you'll pay more for an ice cream scoop that looks like a whale — and you'll use it to serve yourself more ice cream per serving, too.

In this brief — yet lively — video, our experts discuss when whimsicality got them to pay more!

What about you, readers? What home items have you bought, just because they were designed to look "fun"? Tell us in the comments below!

I also own a ceramic q-tip holder that looks like a porcupine. It's precious.
It also cost about 1,700% more than every other container for such things.
Do I clean my ears more because of it? A gentleman never tells.

I don't buy things because it's whimsical but occasionally I buy things because I find it on dealnews which I probably could live without and dont even utilize them.

I enjoyed the video and confess that I always look for 'cute' or 'different' things to add to my home decor or car. I usually back off when the price is outrageous but it is fun to dream of owning them! What caught my eye first thing was the alligator stapler...followed the link from there!

I would definitely find a reason to staple more things if I had an alligator stapler.
