Title: Assistant Managing Editor — NYC (Full-Time)

dealnews is seeking a full-time Assistant Managing Editor (AME) to work from dealnews’ Brooklyn, NY editorial office. The Assistant Managing Editor will report to the Managing Editor (ME) of dealnews. Candidates should have a combination of HR, writing, copy editing, finance management, travel scheduling, and general administrative skills. The AME will assist the ME and Features Editor (FE) in hiring, managing, scheduling and budgeting for the company’s 24/7 content team and its freelance writers. The AME will write the performance evaluations of the content team by interviewing other content managers and then compiling those interviews into a written performance evaluation. The AME will monitor and track billing and budgets, coordinate facility and IT needs for the editorial staff, learn and perform Staffwriter duties, and help maintain the Style Guide. Occasional travel to company’s Huntsville, AL, headquarters, and its office in Dublin, Ireland (and other possible locations as needed), is required.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Managing Editor and Features Editor to ensure well-trained staff is available to sufficiently meet the Editorial and Content production needs.
  • Support the ME and FE with administrative assistance as required.
  • Manage and maintain the shift schedule (24/7) for all internal and external (freelance) editorial staff members. Ensure vacation, holiday, sick leave, and travel absences are covered by appropriate staff.
  • Schedule and book travel for the editorial staff.
  • Serve as the content team liaison to all freelance writers.
  • Develop job descriptions and recruitment ads, solicit and interview candidates for full-time and freelance jobs. Coordinate with ME and corporate HR department on all hiring tasks.
  • Ensure the facility, computing, and other business-related needs of the content team are provided for.
  • Assist the ME and FE with routine HR and personnel management tasks, including periodic performance reviews.
  • Become proficient with dealnews’ CMS and assist as fill-in Staffwriter when not performing the above tasks.

Requirements

  • College degree required.
  • Professional writing experience is required.
  • Experience supporting or performing HR tasks, including recruiting, interviewing, or performance reviews, is required.

Desired Qualifications

  • Copy editing experience
  • Experience writing for a technology-related publication preferred.
  • Work experience as an executive, administrative, editorial, or HR assistant is preferred.

However, any Alabama resident that is interested in telecommuting is encouraged to apply. (Occasional travel to our NYC and/or Huntsville offices is required.) This person will also be expected to work closely with the dealnews content team to achieve goals.
