Title: Freelance Feature Writer

The dealnews Features Team produces the long-form articles that appear on the shopping website, dealnews.com. We aim to offer our deal-hunting readers in-depth advice about various product categories, savvy shopping techniques, and the latest tech releases, as well as provide updates on news in the consumer electronics and retail industries. We often attempt to put a "price" or "value" spin on many of our features. You can view examples of our content.

We are looking for freelance writers who:
  • have a fresh, snappy, lively voice
  • have a handle on cultural references and a sense of humor
  • abide by deadlines and have a quick turnover time, when required
  • are willing to pitch ideas for potential content
  • appreciate the thrill of getting a deal

Additional Requirements

  • You must have a demonstrable background (or furtive interest) in consumer technology. You should eagerly follow rumors, releases, and news about the industry so that you have personal knowledge to draw from when assessing a topic you've been assigned.
  • It is preferable that you also be familiar with the retail industry; you should at least be comfortable discussing trends and news stories within retail.
  • You must have previous experience writing for an online publication.
  • You must have strong writing skills (knowledge of Chicago style preferred) and the ability to adapt to dealnews style.
  • You should feel comfortable contacting sources when necessary; writers with an established network of industry connections are preferred.
  • You should be capable of molding your copy to the dealnews audience. The most successful freelance writers we've had familiarize themselves with our existing content.

Note that we will continue to collect submissions from applicants and contact qualified writers as needed.

Payment

This is not a salaried position, and there is no guaranteed number of assignments. However, we hope to build relationships with writers that we can rely on, which will likely result in periodic assignments.

We pay a flat fee that ranges from $100 to $250 per article, and the sum depends on the type of feature that is assigned.

Whether it's Amazon's price drop on the latest 3D TV, or a Groupon for the hottest bar in town, dealnews informs its readers with real-time, late-breaking news on deals. We give shoppers the context to make the right purchasing choices amongst a vast and confusing sea of information. Become our next Staffwriter. (Travel to our Huntsville and/or New York City offices will be required as necessary.) This position is only available for dealnews' "Weekend Shift," which is a 32 hour shift, Friday-Monday, 9am-6pm Eastern time. This shift is paid as a full time 40 hour work week.
