Free stuff for Papa abounds this year, if you know where to look. And if the dad in your life is anything like me -- constantly asking my sweetie, Where are my keys? And have you seen my iPhone? -- then you know it's not prudent to leave the looking up to him.
That's why I've made it easy for you by vigorously combing through the bargains to give you Green Dad's Father's Day Freebies for 2011. You're sure to find something on this list that will make your pappy happy, and you won't have to expend a single penny to do it.
1) Free Father's Day Breakfast at IKEA
That salutation to Dads on the IKEA website is not a misprint, and neither is this offer: Visit a local IKEA store before 11 am Sun. June 19 and get Dad a free breakfast of scrambled eggs, hash browns, bacon and a hot cup of coffee. Check out the IKEA website for complete details. The good news is that the whole family can get good grub at IKEA for cheap. The bad news is that any sort of impulse shopping before or after breakfast could wipe out the free breakfast savings faster than you can say Swedish meatballs. So listen up Dad: No buying 10 bookshelves for your bobblehead collection.
2) Free Quesadillas at Denny's
When social media meets Mexican comfort food, what's not to like? Follow this link to the Denny's Facebook page, then send Dad the Father's Day e-card. Result? You and Dad both score coupons for a free quesadilla. That's almost as good as the free meals Denny's gives out on birthdays. I used to beg my wife to take me to Denny's on my birthday, and she'd shake her head. But on Father's Day, Daddy-O gets to call the shots...and I can taste those free quesadillas now. Cheesy!
3) Free Yogurt at TCBY
With more than 470 locations nationwide, TCBY dishes out the Father's Day love with free yogurt for the Big Guy. Stop by your local store for details; you can locate a TCBY here. Check to make sure your store is taking part in the promotion. By the way, notice how these first three items are all linked to food in some way? That should tell you something about the nature of dads, and men in general.
4) One Year of Free Data from T-Mobile
Stop by a T-Mobile this Saturday, June 18, and you can get Dad free data for a year when you sign up for a qualifying unlimited talk, text and data plan. That amounts to $120 in savings, and you can get details at the T-Mobile website. Just make sure that if you send Dad to the site you warn him about the perils of staring at the vivacious T-Mobile Vixen for too long, in her way-cute pastel pink dress with that silky soft brunette hairdo that curls around her shoulders like tendrils of...OK, where were we?
5) Free Greeting Cards at 123 Greetings
Dad may want a card, but chances are he's not going to ask. Guys aren't like that with their feelings; that's why we like to talk about sports and grilling instead. But you can head him off at the emotional impasse by sending him a heartfelt salutation from 123 Greetings. Some of their spotlighted Father's Day selections can be found here, and in about as much time as it takes to read this column, you can send Dad just the ticket to brighten up his e-mail box. And if you manage to work in some key references to barbecued pork loin and the New York Yankees, so much the better.
6) Free Collage Posters at Walgreens
Buy one collage poster at 11 x 14 and Walgreens will give you one for free in honor of Dad, a $12 value. Get details on the deal at the Walgreens website; remember to enter the promo code 1FORDAD when you check out from the website to get your discount. You can also create your collage poster by starting at the same web address.
7) Free Business Cards at Staples
Act by Sat. June 18 and you can snag this special we found: 100 free black-and-white business cards at Staples. Follow this link to your printable coupon, which will save you $20. There's a limit of one coupon per customer, but no limit on what kind of honorary title you could give Pop on his own card: "Jack of All Trades," "The King of Tuck-Ins," or "Pater Maximus‚" come to mind. Just in case anyone in my family is listening.
Feeling inspired now? We hope so. Go for it, because Father's Day marks one of the few can't-miss chances to thank Dad for all he does for you. Besides, there's nothing wrong with greasing the skids in advance of the next time you have to hit him up for some cash, borrow the car, or work him for a new toy. And we are not necessarily talking to the kids here, either.
