What to Expect from Mother's Day Sales, and How to Save $300 With Deals

Mother's Day is around the corner, and since traditional gifts are in high demand before the holiday, it's unlikely that sons and daughters looking for a gift will get the very best prices. However, there are still Mother's Day deals to be had on jewelry, perfume, and more. So instead of throwing your hands up in deal defeat, check out our buying guide below, which has been cultivated with data from past Mother's Day sales. Go on, find out which gifts will offer big savings this year and make Ma proud!

Diamonds (and Perfume) Are a Mother's Best Friend

If your mum craves sparkles, then keep an eye out for coupons from sites like ICE and Ross-Simmons; last year we saw such jewelry sellers take 20% to 25% off sitewide, and some offers even included free shipping. We saw the largest discounts on individual pieces, though. In the days leading up to Mother's Day, we saw lots of daily deals on jewelry — many at prices far below retail — with savings of as much as $300. Because these deals expire quickly, the best way to score a hot jewelry discount is to set up an email alert.

If your mom isn't into bling, another best bet for Mother's Day is perfume. In the weeks leading up to the holiday last year, Perfumania offered several stacking discounts, including a code that took 25% off sitewide and cut $10 off orders of $50 or more. These offers were extremely short-lived, however, only lasting a single day. So if your mom has her heart set on Dior J'Adore, be sure to keep an eye out for these sales.

Photo Services to Make Her Smile

A photograph of loved ones is a gift that rarely fails to make moms happy, and if last year is any indication, you can expect to see great deals on photo services before Mother's Day. We'll post offers from sites like Groupon and Living Social for credits or vouchers for photo print services at Vistaprint, Picaboo, Shutterfly, and Snapfish. For example, last year we saw a $70 Vistaprint credit for just $17 from Groupon; that's like getting 76% off.

Skip the Flowers

The go-to item on everyone's Mother's Day shopping list tends to be flowers. However, last year during this final stretch before Mother's Day, we only saw a handful of coupons for online florists like Teleflora, 1-800-Flowers, and FTD. In most cases, these merchants offered discounts of 15% to 25%, but shipping was a hefty $15 to $21, especially if you wanted actual holiday delivery. Alternatively, we suggest looking out for vouchers from group buying sites that take 50% off the cost of a $30 to $40 credit.

Of course not all moms love flowers and perfume; to avoid the clichéd gifts altogether, get your mom something unexpected! A great start would be to scan our Editors' Choice section for particularly hot deals. For example, why not go big and give your mom a tricked-out laptop? Before you clench your wallet tight, know that poor sales have put Windows 8 laptop prices at record lows. Bring mom (and dad, for that matter) into the modern mobile age with a fancy touchscreen ultraportable, and watch as your siblings sputter to top your thoughtful gift.

Of course, any mom will tell you that the best gift you can give her is the gift of your time. Give her a visit or a phone call, and you're guaranteed to make her feel good on Mother's Day. If you're still not sure what to get Mom, check out our extended Mother's Day gift guide to get inspired!
