At this point, we're all pretty familiar with the notion of Black Friday season, right? We could probably all close our eyes and guess that this year's "doorbusters" will be the usual suspects — a giant TV, a cheap-o laptop, a KitchenAid mixer, etc.
But, as Black Friday continues to evolve into a massive promotional season instead of just one day, more stores want to get in on the hype. An opportunity to discount even unconventional wares in the hopes of bigger profits is too good to pass up. That's why you might be surprised to learn what other kinds of items you can score on sale during Black Friday. From wine to luxury goods, here are some Black Friday deals that go way beyond the typical electronics.
This won't be shocking for devout DealNews readers, but for those just joining us, hang onto your hats: You can, in fact, get a deal on Apple products during the Black Friday season. We'll give you a second to put your blown-mind back together. OK.
In fact, Apple Black Friday deals will see discounts of up to 40% off, but you'll need to shop at resellers. (Find out what stores typically offer the best deals here.) Apple devices tend to carry the same doorbuster appeal as ridiculously-cheap big-screen TVs do, so these deals are excellent at drumming up publicity and sales.
Your best bet for discounts this year? The iPad Air 2, which will see that 40% discount. However, because you can never get everything you want in life, the iPad Pro won't see any discounts — but might come bundled with a gift card, if you're lucky.
While you won't see a bacchanalia of wine deals, you're likely to find at least one or two extremely noteworthy discounts from major online or nationwide sellers. For example, last year Liquor Barn offered a coupon that took 10% off a purchase of $200 or more. Previous years have seen Astor Wines & Spirits take 20% off everything in its store, while Groupon offered excellent credits for Wine Insider and Naked Wines. Also be on the lookout for discounted shipping from online vendors. Cheers.
According to our Black Friday predictions research, stores will actually discount coveted beauty items during this time, with a full 26% of those deals marked by our experts as Editors' Choice. (For comparison, so far this year only 15% of all beauty deals have been given that highest honor.) Look to stores like The Body Shop, Sephora, Bath & Body Works, and Victoria's Secret for "buy one, get one" and "$10 or less" type sales.
Once upon a time, luxury brands wouldn't be caught dead offering Black Friday sales; but these days, you're almost guaranteed to see the outlet branches of some big names — like Last Call by Neiman Marcus — offer special promotions. According to our research, they're likely to launch sales early during Black Friday week — as early as Monday!
It didn't occur to us, until a tea-loving writer brought it to our attention, that Black Friday would be steeped in great deals on dried leaves. But that's exactly what we've seen in years past. Look to tea chains Teavana and Harney & Sons to offer coupons and discounts that'll bag you 25% off.
Turns out that Thanksgiving season isn't just for turkey, as for the past several years a Black Friday sale from Omaha Steaks has not been rare, with discounts up to 72% off. The free shipping they've been offering the last two years is just the gravy on top. Why not stock up and freeze most of it, so you can enjoy thawed beef all year round? Any taste of eventual freezer burn will be overwhelmed by the taste of sweet savings.
Google Play, Amazon, and Microsoft rocked out a slew of free MP3s and discounted albums last year during Black Friday. Google Play proffered albums from Imagine Dragons, dedmau5, Nirvana, Lorde, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, and Rihanna; Amazon cut prices on Taylor Swift albums; and Microsoft offered the likes of Eminem, Green Day, STP, Weezer, and Rihanna to those who owned Windows Phones. Even if you don't usually like the artists offered, you might like them when they're free.
A number of merchants will bundle their Black Friday items with free in-store credits that can be used towards future purchases to keep you coming back. But look for others stores to offer discounted gift cards; iTunes gift cards in particular are a popular option. Plus, if you're savvy with rebates, you might even make a profit on your Black Friday purchases. Stores like Newegg may offer deals that are priced lower than the included rebate, which means you'll pocket the difference.
Look for discounts or sizable gift cards of around $1,000 with your purchase of a new automobile, but keep in mind that these discounts aren't springing up for just this specific holiday. "Black Friday lines up nicely with the annual year-end inventory clearance process that dealers begin late in Q3, and that's what is really driving value at this time of year," says an analyst from Kelley Blue Book.
Usually the individual items that are discounted in a drugstore's Black Friday ad aren't all that exciting or special, but sitewide discounts certainly are! Look to online vendors like Soap.com and drugstore.com to offer coupons that slash 25% to 30% off the things you buy regularly anyway. Unless you're a medical miracle, you're definitely going to need more toilet paper, so why not stock up?
Technically, hard drives and their ilk fall into the computer and electronics categories, which are standard Black Friday participants, but very few people think to load up on storage deals during this yearly mad-dash event. It's a shame, because it's an excellent time to score external and internal hard drives, SSDs, and flash drives. You should totally buy so much storage that you run out of room in your house and need to rent a storage space — a "storage storage space," if you will. That's ironic ... or just dumb.
