When Do Halloween Sales Start?

Halloween sales for 2023 have already begun! Decor for the holiday hit shelves by midsummer this year, and because of that stretch, we've already seen modest Halloween discounts pop up a few times. Mainly, we've seen stores taking around 30%-40% off costumes, decorations, and candy already.

According to the 2023 survey from the NRF, 45% of shoppers celebrating the holiday planned to start looking for spooky goods before October. As the month goes on, you can expect stores to start discounting their Halloween stock even more. But if you wait until the last few days before October 31 to get your Halloween shopping done, you may find you have limited choices. With 73% of Americans planning to celebrate Halloween this year, it's possible that shoppers will scoop up coveted costumes, home decor, and candy by the end of October.

What Should You Buy From Halloween Sales in 2023?

Halloween sales might not be on most shoppers' radars, but they should be! These events offer excellent savings on a variety of spooky-themed goodies that may go beyond the standard costumes and candy. Consider focusing on these categories when shopping the 2023 Halloween sales:

What to Expect From Halloween Sales in 2023

With more people planning to celebrate Halloween this year but also feeling the strain of higher costs, it's important for retailers to offer discounts early enough and high enough for shoppers to justify the discretionary spending. Per-person Halloween spending is forecast to increase from last year's average. People plan to shell out $108.24 this year, up from $100.45 in 2022, according to the NRF.

Knowing when and where to find Halloween deals will help you keep your holiday budget in check. Let's break down how much you can expect to save on Halloween costumes, candy, and decorations in 2023.

Halloween costumes at Target were 30% off in 2022, while Petco cut 50% off pet Halloween costumes. Amazon, meanwhile, knocked up to 77% off select kids' and babies' costumes and up to 50% off inflatable costumes for the holiday.

Expect Halloween costume deals to take at least 30% off, with discounts climbing up to 75% off or more later in the month.

We've already seen Target offer an extra 30% off costumes with Target Circle membership this month, while Walmart costumes for kids have been priced from just $4 and adult costumes, from $6. Want to get in on the Barbie hype for Halloween? Look to Spirit Halloween to take 20% off costumes from the movie. Also watch for the Halloween store to take as much as 50% off clearance costumes — a discount that should get better closer to the holiday.

This year's NRF Halloween survey indicates that 68% of consumers plan to hand out candy, spending $3.6 billion total on the sweet treats to do so. To save big on Halloween candy, buy it in bulk from stores like Amazon, Target, and Walmart. Bulk candy prices generally range from $10-$30, but those prices could drop even more as we get closer to the spooky holiday.

Want to deck out your front yard for trick-or-treaters this year or have fabulous home decor for your Halloween party? You can expect to find plenty of deals on Halloween decorations during the month. Target decorations have already provided savings, with prices starting at just $5. But it's worth looking at craft stores, as well. Michaels has already knocked up to 60% off plus 20% off a variety of spooky decor, while Amazon has cut up to 44% off. Deals like these will probably pop up more this month before getting even better closer to the end of October.

While the NRF found that many Americans intend to shop for Halloween in person, they reported that 32% of people plan to buy Halloween items online in 2023. We've already seen retailers like Amazon offering online deals, as noted above. And there's a good chance those will only get better as the month goes on. Watch for sites like Oriental Trading to also have excellent deals, with prices starting at $1 and discounts up to 65% off.

You might think that Halloween sales are just for costumes, candy, and spooky decorations. But other retailers offer serious Halloween discounts to celebrate the holiday, too. If you love video games, you won't want to miss this year's Steam Scream, a weeklong event from October 26-November 2 featuring discounts on current video games as well as pre-orders; you can expect special discounts on horror-themed games.

Expect Halloween decorations to see discounts as high as 60% off at stores like Michaels well before the holiday.

And if you want to shop Halloween sales featuring non-holiday items, check out the Harman Audio Halloween Sale, plus look for events at stores such as ASOS and Rockport. All three hosted Halloween sales last October.

What About After-Halloween Sales?

People love to joke about waiting until after Halloween to buy candy because of the huge dip in prices, and they aren't wrong! As retailers get ready to make room on their shelves for winter holiday products, you're likely to find after-Halloween sales with discounts ranging from 50%-80% off all Halloween items, not just candy.

Hoping to get a jump-start on Halloween 2024? We recommend stocking up on the heavily discounted decorations and costumes you'll find at your favorite stores on November 1. Maybe eat the discounted candy right away, though. It probably won't earn you any appreciation if you save it for next year's trick-or-treaters.
